What are PIE funds?

The Plato Global Alpha strategy is now available to New Zealand investors in the form of a portfolio investment entity (PIE) fund.

A PIE fund is a type of New Zealand managed investment scheme that qualifies for specific tax rules under New Zealand tax legislation. Under these rules, income is attributed to investors and taxed at their prescribed investor rate (PIR).

A potential benefit of investing in a PIE fund is that tax is applied at an investor’s PIR, which is generally based on their taxable income (and PIE income) over the previous two income years. In some cases, this rate may be lower than the investor’s marginal tax rate. It is important to ensure the correct PIR is applied before investing (if you are unsure, you should seek professional advice, contact Inland Revenue, or refer to their website).

PIE tax is generally a final tax for most investors, provided the correct PIR has been used. For many individual investors, this means PIE income does not need to be included in their personal tax return. PIE funds may therefore also provide administrative benefits for New Zealand taxpayers.

Note that each investor has a unique tax position, and you should seek your own tax advice before making any investment decision. Before investing, you should read the Product Disclosure Statement and consider the investment risks.

FundRock NZ Limited (FundRock) in Wellington, New Zealand is the Manager and Issuer of the Fund, with investment management undertaken by Plato Investment Management (Plato).
